Welcome

The CoolRVers were actually a couple of retirees, Judy and Luke Rinehimer and their rescue German Shepherd dog, Miss Shady Lady. We were "extended-time" travelers for many years with a homebase in Cool, California for 40 years. Luke passed away in May 2019 and I continued to RV. Many followed along with our travels throughout North America in our 40' "rolling condo" and our later downsized Class C motorhome, enjoying the RV lifestyle. Your comments are always welcomed.

"Q" is for Quirky (#AtoZChallenge)

As an active RVer, when someone talks about "Q" they are almost always referring to the small Arizona desert town of Quartzsite.  Today, however, my "A to Z Bloggers Challenge", is going to look at the quirkiness of the letter Q.

ORIGINS OF "Q"

My electronic research "go to" source for any question I might have is WIKIPEDIA and a simple search on the letter "Q" will get us started.  I am not a Biblical scholar but there seems to be a lot of history on "Q".
The Q source (also Q documentQ GospelQ Sayings Gospel, or Q from GermanQuelle, meaning "source") is a hypothetical written collection of Jesus' sayings (logia). Q is part of the common material found in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke but not in the Gospel of Mark. According to this hypothesis, this material was drawn from the early Church's Oral Tradition.[1][2][3]

HOW DO YOU WRITE IT?

Cursive handwriting is barely taught today but IF you have to write the letter "Q" as a cursive capital letter do you shape it like the number "2" or like the letter "O" with a squiggly tail?

There is always YouTube for digital examples on how to write it.  This is a 3:26 video after you get past a brief Steve Martin intro!!!

Can't forget "lower case" Qs.  Do you remember learning to write letters with "ascender" and "decender" parts using pre-lined paper with dashes?   Are you having a flashback right now asking yourself which way the "q" curled the tail versus the lower case "g".  Computer typography doesn't do justice to the way we learned to write "back then"!

MORE "Q" QUIRKINESS

Not all words follow the "Q" and "U" rule.  If you are a Scrabble game player and have the letter Q in your tray there is help for you.  Check out Scrabble Word Finder.  Of the 70 words listed the only word I recognized is from my computer vocabulary:  QWERTY

QWERTY keyboard,
(Printing, Lithography & Bookbinding) the standard English language typewriter
keyboard layout with the characters q,w, e, r, t, and y positioned on the top row of   alphabetic characters at the left side of the keyboard.

And an easy Scrabble point word, and the only two-letter word starting with a Q is Qi:
qi
n 1: the circulating life energy that in Chinese philosophy is thought to be inherent in all things; in traditional Chinese medicine the balance of negative and positive forms in the body is believed to be essential for good health syn: {qi}, {chi}, {ch'i},{ki}]

Q's PLACE IN THE ALPHABET

Do you need to sing the "Alphabet Song" to remember where the letter "Q" is in the traditional order of letters in the American alphabet?  Thankfully, this "Blogging from A to Z Challenge" is keeping me on task to blog about a theme each day in April for each of the 26 letters.  (We get Sundays off until April 30 so each letter gets its own day.)

"QUILLINAN" EXPERIENCES

This is a truly personal story but I can connect it to the letter "Q". My older brother Frank Quillinan and his wife Shirley Quillinan raised me as a teenager after the rest of my direct family had died under various circumstances.  My sister-in-law Shirley is now a widow and at age 85 is still going strong. As a matter of fact I am going with her and the other Quillinan girls on a cruise to Alaska next month.

When I asked if I could use the "QUILLINAN" name in today's blog theme Shirley said certainly! She added it was quite an experience to marry into a last name starting with a Q.  Her maiden name had been Sherwood. Her first problem comment about having a last name beginning with "Q" was always going into professional offices and the staff could never find her paperwork because it is always mis-filed.  "Q" folders were not where they should have been between "P" and "R".

As a hair stylist and previous owner of a clothing boutique store, Shirley said another problem was finding "monogrammed" decorating items for the home. Today you can get quite an assortment of "Q" monogrammed ideas from Pinterest.  If you are a "Quillinan Queen", for example, you might like this on your love-seat throw pillow:

Patterned golden letter Q monogram in vintage style. Heraldic coat of arms. Baroque logo template.

Now you can go back and re-sing the Alphabet Song! If you are into Rap Music you might like this version:

Lower case Q's are written differently in Ecuador. Every time I write my name, it ends up with a g in it in their reading it. So I have resorted to writing my last name in all capital letters.

Other letters and numbers, I've had no problem adapting. lower case q though, can't get that one right.
